Created by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich for Iron Man #55 in 1973, Drax the Destroyer was originally a human named Arthur Douglas whose family was brutally murdered by the mad titan Thanos. Deeply affected by this tragedy, Arthur's spirit was collected by Thanos' father, Mentor, who, with the help of the cosmic entity Kronos, transferred it into a new superhuman body. This is how Drax was born, a living weapon whose sole purpose and all-consuming obsession is to hunt down and annihilate Thanos. This relentless and single-minded warrior is a dark and tragic figure in the comics, very different from the more humorous version popularized by the MCU, which makes his classic version all the more iconic.
