The Gargoyle is a fictional character created by writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Don Perlin for Marvel Comics. To save his ancestral hometown of Christianboro, Isaac Christians, also known as The Gargoyle, uses his mystical knowledge to summon the demon Avarrish, a member of the Six-Fingered Hand—an order of infernal lords. Avarrish agrees to protect the town in exchange for Isaac's service: he must capture Hellcat to make her a host for the demonic entity. To fulfill this task, Isaac is transformed into a gargoyle-like hellish creature, becoming a slave to the demon.
Although Isaac fights the Defenders, his lack of zeal angers Avarrish, who punishes him by permanently binding him to the gargoyle’s body. Eventually, Isaac redeems himself and joins the Defenders.
