The original Human Torch, also known as Jim Hammond, is an android created by Professor Phineas Horton. Designed by Carl Burgos, he first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 in 1939. Upon activation, his body accidentally ignites upon exposure to oxygen, causing chaos and panic before he learns to control his powers.

Endowed with pyrokinetic abilities, Jim can ignite himself at will, project fireballs, fly, absorb and manipulate heat, and is completely immune to fire. During World War II, he joins the Invaders, alongside Captain America and Namor, to fight against Axis forces. After the war, he leads a quieter life working as a police officer in New York.

Although his appearances in modern comics have become less frequent, Jim Hammond remains a symbolic figure of the Golden Age of superheroes, paving the way for characters like Johnny Storm, the Human Torch of the Fantastic Four.
