He is a professional athlete and explorer with an unknown legal status and secret identity. He originates from an unidentified planet in an unidentified galaxy—both of which have vanished millions of years ago. He is single and has no known relatives. He is a member of the Elders of the Universe and operates freely across space. The Runner first appeared in Defenders (vol. 1) #143 in May 1985, created by Peter B. Gillis and Don Perlin, and made his first French appearance in Nova #122 in March 1988.
